Linear LEDs Beginning to Penetrate Market as Fluorescent Lamp Shipments Continue to Slide

T-LED lamps held a 6.9% share of shipments in 2016Q1, marking their first appearance in the market penetration chart.

NEMA’s linear fluorescent lamp shipments indexes fell in the first quarter of 2016 for the ninth consecutive quarter of declines on a year-over-year basis. After increasing modestly in 2015Q4, the index for T12 lamps posted a 12.0% quarter-over-quarter decrease, and a steeper 14.5% decline from the first quarter 2015. T5 and T8 shipments also continued lower, decreasing by 1.3% and 8.9%, respectively, year-over-year.

T8 lamps accounted for a 67.4% share of fluorescent lamp shipments in 2016Q1, with T12 lamps claiming a 14.5% share and T5 lamps an 11.2% share. T-LED lamps held a 6.9% share of shipments in 2016Q1, marking their first appearance in the market penetration chart. NEMA will continue to track the growth of T-LED lamps and will integrate the category into the index as more historical data becomes available.
