General Cable Corp., Highland Heights, Ky., announced an expansion into the emerging market for supplies specifically for use with distributed solar systems. With a new SunGen brand, General Cable will now provide electrical distributors with solar specialty cables.

The company said consumer demand for distributed solar energy systems is growing rapidly, and small- to medium-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) installations are turning up in any location with available space and an abundance of sunlight — from rooftops and parking lots, to brownfields and highways. PV applications require wire with specific mechanical properties and superior sunlight resistance for outdoor installations, flame-resistance for added safety, and flexibility for easy handling. General Cable’s SunGen PV wire is UL 4703 and CSA RPVU90 listed and VW-1 rated for reliability in long-term outdoor sun exposure, and in compliance color requirements for PV wire for source circuit identification specified in the National Electrical Code.

“In partnership with distribution and their contractor alliances, we are excited to broaden our reach into the expanding distributed solar market and deliver the right product when and where it’s needed,” said Tom Bisson, General Cable vice president, sales, electrical distribution.
