A big piece of the solar game in the Golden State is the valuable rooftop real estate that solar developers are scarfing up to install PV systems. The developers sell the electricity these systems produce to utilities by pumping it back onto the electrical grid; building owners get a break on their electrical bills.

According to a Bloomberg report, ProLogis, the world's largest owner of warehouses, will lease 4.8 million square feet of roof space on eight Los Angeles properties to Southern California Edison Co. as part of a 100-megawatt solar-energy program. The company says it has more than 450 million square feet of rooftop space available for solar development.
