PowerSecure International Inc., Wake Forest, N.C., a publicly held energy company with interests in the utility/smart grid and lighting retrofit markets, has purchased two LED manufacturers. The company bought a majority stake in Innovative Electronic Solutions Lighting (IES), Morrisville, N.C., and a full stake in EfficientLights, Anderson, S.C., a developer of LED lighting products for grocery store refrigerated cases.
IES has engineered dozens of lighting products and is currently producing a LED street light for utilities that it hopes to market internationally. PowerSecure intends to exercise its option to increase its EfficientLights ownership interest from 67 percent to 100 percent, and expects the transaction to be completed early in the second quarter of 2010. The company said EfficientLights’ LEDs saves grocery, drug and convenience stores 70 percent of the cost of operating traditional fluorescent lighting in their refrigerated cases.
PowerSecure provides energy and smart grid solutions to electric utilities and their commercial, institutional and industrial customers, as well as energy services to the oil and natural gas industry. The company’s Energy Efficiency business unit provides customers with energy-efficient lighting technologies.
In 2009, PowerSecure’s revenue was $102.5 million and its net income was $2.8 million. Its revenue backlog on Dec. 31, 2009 was estimated at $120 million.
