NEMA Releases Standard for Vibration Testing Roadway and Area Lighting

Jan. 9, 2019
The Roadway and Area Lighting Equipment committee is also looking for new members.

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), Rosslyn, VA, has a new standard out for street and area lighting that addresses the impact of vibration on roadway lighting. NEMA published ANSI C136.31-2018 American National Standard for Roadway and Area Lighting Equipment—Luminaire Vibration, which was developed by the ANSI Committee for Roadway and Area Lighting.

The new standard describes the minimum vibration capability and vibration test methods for roadway and area luminaires.

“This revision includes clarification and guidance on the requirements for test setup, value determination and measurement, operation, and evaluation. Furthermore, the vibration test levels were expanded to include common materials found in newer lighting technologies,” said Luke Siefker, Standard Technical Coordinator, Acuity Brands.

ANSI C136.31-2018 is available on the NEMA website.

NEMA also mentioned that the ANSI Accredited Standards Committee (ASC) C136 for Roadway and Area Lighting Equipment is looking for interested members, particularly in the underrepresented categories of End User and General Interest.
