Electrical Marketing’s Leading Economic Indicators - July 2016

July 22, 2016
Check out what's happening with building permits, AIA's Architecture Billings Index, the Purchasing Managers Index and the Baker Hughes U.S. Oil Rig Count..

June building permits up 1.5%. The U.S. Census Bureau said building permits in June were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,153,000. This is 1.5% above the revised May rate of 1,136,000, but 13.6% below the June 2015 estimate of 1,334,000. Single-family authorizations in June were at a rate of 738,000; 1% above the revised May figure of 731,000. Authorizations of units in buildings with five units or more were at a rate of 384,000 in June.

Architecture Billings Index slides 1.3 points in April. After beginning the year with a decline, the Architecture Billings Index has posted three consecutive months of increasing demand for design activity at architecture firms. As a leading economic indicator of construction activity, the ABI reflects the approximate nine- to twelve-month lead time between architecture billings and construction spending.
The American Institute of Architects (AIA) reported the April ABI score was 50.6, down from the mark of 51.9 in the previous month. This score still reflects an increase in design services (any score above 50 indicates an increase in billings). The new projects inquiry index was 56.9, down from a reading of 58.1 the previous month.
“Architects continue to report a wide range of business conditions, with unusually high variation in design activity across the major building categories,” said AIA Chief Economist Kermit Baker.  “The strong growth in design contracts — the strongest score for this indicator since last summer — certainly suggests that firms will be reporting growth in billings over the next several months.”

Purchasing Managers Index sees solid gain in June. The June Purchasing Managers Index registered 53.2% percent, an increase of 1.9 percentage points from the May reading of 51.3% percent. The PMI is a survey of purchasing managers that’s part of the Report On Business published monthly by the Institute for Supply Management, Tempe, Ariz.

U.S rig count edges up in June. The June 2016 U.S oil rig count compiled by Baker Hughes Inc., Houston, was 417, up nine from the 408 counted in May 2016, but still down 444 from the 861 counted in June 2015.
