Electrical contractors sales potential was tracking a bit better in 2Q 2016, according to data recently compiled by Electrical Marketing’s editors and mapped out in the new data visualization tool that we recently developed below. Just click on the state and an info window will pop up with EM's latest Electrical Market Sales Potential and Key Growth Indicators.

According to EM estimates, electrical contractor sales for the United States in April-June 2016 are now tracking at $38.3 billion on an annual basis for 2016, a 7% increase from their pace in 1Q 2016. The increase can be attributed to  the increase in hiring by electrical contractors in 2Q 2016. EM estimates and the latest data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that electrical contractors now have 871,529 employees, an increase of over 57,000 employees from 1Q 2016. Electrical contractor employment is up 3.9% year-over-year (YOY) from April-June 2015. These estimates are based on three-month moving averages of electrical contractor employment; the percent of business electrical contractor sales account for in the electrical wholesaling industry; and Electrical Wholesaling’s sales-per-employee multiplier for electrical contractors of $43,993.

As you can see in this data table, state level growth is a a crazy quilt of extremes, with Iowa and Hawaii showing double-digit YOY growth in contractor potential and 21 other states tracking above the national growth average of 3.9%. Electrical Marketing estimates that 55% of the contractor employment increases driving this growth comes from just 10 states: New York, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Ohio, California, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa and Massachusetts.
