NLB Video Panel Looks at Lighting in Smart Cities

Jan. 10, 2018
This video from the National Lighting Bureau takes a look at the role roadway lighting plays in realizing the potential of smart cities.

The National Lighting Bureau (NLB) released another in its series of panel discussions from its most recent Annual Lighting Forum and this one takes an intriguing look at the role roadway lighting plays in realizing the potential of smart cities.

NLB host and Edison Report editor/publisher Randy Reid takes Mark Lien of IES, Jim Benya of Benya Burnett Consultancy and Shelli Sedlak of Current, powered by GE, through a discussion of the scenario where poles would be equipped with sensors and other devices to do things like enhance GPS; monitor seismic activity; measure temperature, humidity, wind speed, wind direction, pollen, and radiation; listen for gun shots; increase or decrease illumination based on traffic conditions; and even recharge delivery drones.

The discussion ranges from the basic functional capabilities of a smart city street lighting system, how the addition of all that equipment will affect lighting poles, the concern that in the rush to add technologies the importance of the lighting will be overlooked and concerns about the security and ownership of data generated by smart city systems.
