April Housing Starts Fall 2.6% from March but Continue Rise from Year-Ago Level

May 26, 2017

The U.S Census Bureau reported that privately-owned housing starts in April were at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,172,000, -2.6% below the revised March estimate of 1,203,000, but +0.7% above the April 2016 rate of 1,164,000. Single-family housing starts in April were at a rate of 835,000, + 0.4% above the revised March figure of 832,000.

“While we saw a little pause in market growth this month, single-family production is still up +7% since the start of 2017,” said Robert Dietz, chief economist, National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), Washington. D.C., in a press release. “The April report falls in line with our forecast for continued, gradual strengthening of the single-family sector throughout the year.”
