The Board of Supervisors of the City of San Francisco passed an ordinance this week requiring that new construction in the city must install solar panels on their roofs, the San Francisco Examiner reported, taking its earlier requirement that 15% of rooftops be reserved for solar use to a whole new level.
Beginning in January, new commercial and residential buildings of up to 10 stories will be required to install rooftop solar systems for heat or electricity or a combination of the two. This is seen as a move toward the city’s existing goal of achieving 100% renewable energy by 2025.
